Where to Find Prince Edward County’s Cutest Pets 🐱
In addition to The County’s beloved beaches, variety of cideries, breweries and wineries and farm-to-table food scene, another reason to explore The County is the many adorable animals hanging out at our local stores, businesses and destinations. To help you, we’ve curated a list of some places and spaces you can expect to see a furry friend – whether you’re a resident, first-time visitor or have traveled to The County many times.

The Gym in The Armoury
Icebox joined The Gym’s family in July of 2016 from the Midland OSPCA. She’s a Bulldog/Boston Terrier mix and has the temperament of a terrier but sleeps like a bulldog. Icebox prefers a slow life in The County as opposed to the city, a yard of her own and the turf at The Gym in The Armoury.

If you plan a trip to The County’s ‘South Shore,’ make sure to stop into Honey Pie Hives and Herbals, where you may come across three curious cats. There’s one in particular that loves the customers: Stampy has a mission to hug as many people as he possibly can. He’s very persistent and has been known to launch himself at people from the ground!

Long Dog Winery is home to two standard wire-haired dachshunds, Flora and Fern. They are the 5th and 6th dogs for their owners, Victoria and James, who have raised the same breed for more than 30 years. Victoria grew up with dachshunds, converted James to adoring them, and have named the vineyard after them. Unfortunately, the girls aren’t the friendliest and are wary of strangers but love people they know – which for animal lovers may mean making frequent visits to become their friends!

Cooper, a Morkie (Maltese/Yorkie mix), is the shop dog at Luna Boutique. Cooper is a spunky little pup who loves going to work with his human. His favourite activities while at the shop are sunbathing in the window display, keeping up with all the happenings of Picton Main Street, and greeting customers. Cooper’s birthday is in August so if you happen to pop into the shop around then, be sure to wish him a happy birthday!

Melanie of Mena Dragonfly has an incredibly cute Long Haired Miniature Dachshunds, Lexy Lu and, pictured here, her late Aunt Molly, who crossed the rainbow in 2019. Meet little Lexy if you visit the studio, as she’s very social and loves to greet people.

Don’t confuse this bunny for yarn at Rosehaven! | Photo Courtesy: Lesley Snyder
Before you pop into the Rosehaven Yarn Shop, make sure to have either spinach, dandelion greens or mint in your pocket for Bunbun. Bunbun is an English Angora rabbit who came from the Black Jack Rabbit Rescue. She is mostly blind but has no problem moving around the shop and getting pets from people. She enjoys visitors and loves Knit Night on Fridays, when she gets to stay up late with all the ladies. Bunbun lives full time in the shop and has a couple of cubby shelves that she likes to tuck into for a nap, so if you see a large, fluffy, white puff ball on the shelf it might not be a ball of yarn!

Acer and Taffy are sweet as sugar! | Photo Courtesy: Sally Peck
While at Sugarbush Vineyards you may see Acer and Taffy, the owners’ two golden retrievers, roaming the vineyard. They’re super friendly and love the attention of customers. Sugarbush Vineyards is a dog-friendly business and allows dogs onsite, on their patio, picnic area and store (if it’s not too crowded). Folks are welcome to walk their dogs on the vineyard’s 2-km hiking trail, which is available in the spring and fall and for snowshoeing in the winter.

All hands (and paws) on-deck at Stanners Vineyard! | Photo Courtesy: Mary Macdonald
If you pop in for a tasting at Stanner’s Vineyard, there’s a good chance you’ll meet Oliver. Oliver is a sweet, playful goofball who insists on greeting each person who comes through the entrance with something (often a shoe, tea towel or glove) in his mouth. His specialty in the tasting room is carrying around the winery’s rack cards, paper wine bags or kids toys. Oliver loves any and all attention, playing tug of war with anyone who is game and running into the tasting room through the tank room door to choruses of “Aww, what a cute dog!”

Carter is always looking dapper at Zest! | Photo Courtesy: Jenny & Kyle
Carter, a Yorkie-Poo and Poodle, is the shop dog at Zest Kitchen Shop. The shop owners, Kyle and Jenny, are big basketball fans and named him Carter after former Toronto Raptor Vince Carter. Carter is a sweet pup but unfortunately has lost his hearing in his old age but hasn’t lost his spunk! When he’s not napping, he can be found greeting customers or playing fetch.
